Poison Ivy

Itchy rash? Nature's unwelcome hug.

Poison ivy is a common allergic reaction caused by contact with the oil (urushiol) found in the leaves, stems, and roots of the poison ivy plant. It results in an itchy, red rash that can develop into blisters. The rash is not contagious but can spread on the skin through contact with the oil, which can linger on clothing, pets, and other surfaces. Treatment focuses on relieving the itching and discomfort associated with the rash and may include over-the-counter creams, oral antihistamines, and in severe cases, prescription corticosteroids.

Mahalo provides a convenient way to consult with healthcare providers about poison ivy exposure. Through virtual consultations, you can discuss your symptoms, receive advice on managing the rash, and obtain prescriptions for medications to alleviate itching and inflammation, helping you recover more comfortably, all from the safety and privacy of your home.

Precautions

  • Wash the affected area with soap and cool water as soon as possible after exposure to remove the plant's oils, which can cause the rash.
  • Apply calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream to the rash to help reduce itching and inflammation.
  • Take a cool bath with colloidal oatmeal or baking soda, or apply cool, wet compresses to the affected area to soothe itching and promote healing.

Common Medications

  • Creams/ointments such as Hydrocortisone cream or ointment, Triamcinolone acetonide cream or ointment, or Betamethasone cream or ointment
  • Oral corticosteroids such as Prednisone, Methylprednisolone, or Dexamethasone
  • Antihistamines such as Diphenhydramine (Benadryl), Cetirizine (Zyrtec), Loratadine (Claritin)
