Hyperlipidemia
Worried about your lipid levels?
Hyperlipidemia, commonly known as high cholesterol, is a condition characterized by elevated levels of lipids (fats) in the blood, including cholesterol and triglycerides. This condition can lead to serious cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attack and stroke, by contributing to the buildup of plaque in the arteries. Often presenting with no symptoms, it's crucial to manage through lifestyle changes and, when necessary, medication.
Mahalo provides a convenient way to consult with healthcare professionals about managing hyperlipidemia. Through virtual visits, you can get personalized advice on diet, exercise, and medication management to help lower your lipid levels and reduce the risk of heart disease, all from the comfort of your home.
Precautions
- Adopt a heart-healthy diet. Focus on eating a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Incorporate foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, walnuts, and flaxseeds, and limit intake of saturated fats, trans fats, and cholesterol found in red meat and full-fat dairy products.
- Increase physical activity. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise each week, along with muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days a week. Exercise can help raise high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, the "good" cholesterol, and lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, the "bad" cholesterol.
- Maintain a healthy weight. Even a small weight loss can help lower cholesterol levels. Calculate your body mass index (BMI) to find your ideal weight range and work toward it through diet and exercise.
Common Medications
- Statins such as atorvastatin (Lipitor), simvastatin (Zocor), or rosuvastatin (Crestor)
- Ezetimibe (Zetia)
