Dandruff

Flaky scalp? Aim for clarity.

Dandruff is a common scalp condition characterized by flaking and sometimes mild itchiness. It can result from a variety of factors, including dry skin, sensitivity to hair products, and the growth of a specific type of fungus that resides on the scalp. While dandruff is not contagious or serious, it can be embarrassing and sometimes difficult to treat. Effective management often involves using special shampoos designed to reduce oil and fungus levels on the scalp, as well as changes in hair care routines.

Mahalo provides an accessible way to consult with healthcare providers about dandruff. Through virtual consultations, you can discuss your symptoms, identify potential triggers, and receive personalized advice on over-the-counter treatments or prescription medications to manage your scalp condition, helping to reduce flaking and itching, all from the comfort and privacy of your home.

Precautions

  • Use an anti-dandruff shampoo containing active ingredients such as zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, ketoconazole, or salicylic acid. Follow the instructions on the label, as some may require leaving the shampoo on your scalp for several minutes before rinsing.
  • Try natural remedies like rinsing your hair with apple cider vinegar mixed with water (half and half) after shampooing. Apple cider vinegar's acidity can help balance the pH of your scalp and reduce fungal growth associated with dandruff.
  • Increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins B and D to help improve scalp health. Foods rich in these nutrients include fish, flaxseeds, walnuts, and fortified foods. Proper nutrition can support skin health, including your scalp.

Common Medications

  • Antifungal shampoos such as Ketoconazole (Nizoral), Selenium sulfide (Selsun Blue), or Coal tar (T/Gel)
  • Topical corticosteroids such as Hydrocortisone cream or lotion, Clobetasol (Clobex), or Fluocinonide (Lidex)
  • Antifungal creams or lotions such as Clotrimazole (Lotrimin AF), Miconazole (Monistat-Derm), or Terbinafine (Lamisil)
