COPD

Breathing hard? Seek smoother airflow.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a group of progressive lung diseases, the most common being emphysema and chronic bronchitis. COPD is characterized by increasing breathlessness, frequent coughing (with and without sputum), wheezing, and tightness in the chest. The primary cause of COPD is long-term exposure to substances that irritate and damage the lungs, such as cigarette smoke, air pollution, chemical fumes, and dust. Effective management of COPD includes quitting smoking, medications (such as bronchodilators and steroids), pulmonary rehabilitation, and in some cases, oxygen therapy.

Mahalo offers an accessible route to consult with healthcare providers who specialize in respiratory conditions. Through virtual consultations, you can discuss your COPD symptoms, explore treatment options, and receive a comprehensive management plan to help improve your quality of life and slow the progression of the disease, all from the comfort and privacy of your home.

Precautions

  • Practice controlled breathing techniques, such as pursed-lip breathing and diaphragmatic breathing. These can help you manage shortness of breath, improve oxygen exchange, and decrease the effort required to breathe.
  • Stay active with gentle exercises tailored to your ability level. Activities like walking or water aerobics can improve cardiovascular health and lung function over time. Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting a new exercise regimen.
  • Create a clean and safe home environment. Avoid exposure to indoor air pollutants like tobacco smoke, strong odors from cleaning agents, and dust. Using air purifiers and maintaining good ventilation can help reduce irritants in your living space.

Common Medications

  • Bronchodilators such as Albuterol (ProAir, Ventolin), Salmeterol (Serevent), or Tiotropium (Spiriva)
  • Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) such as Fluticasone (Flovent) or Budesonide (Pulmicort)
  • Combination inhalers containing bronchodilators and corticosteroids such as Fluticasone/salmeterol (Advair) or Budesonide/formoterol (Symbicort)
